Paul has been involved in teaching anatomical sciences to medical students, science students and a range of postgraduate surgical and medical specialists for over 40 years. He undertook a professional training in medical anatomy (M.Sc. [Med. Sci]) after his PhD days at Glasgow University, Scotland. He migrated to Perth in 1987 and worked at The University of Western Australia for 23 years before taking up the post of Director of 'The Centre for Human Anatomy Education' in the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, Melbourne. He retired in early 2020 but keeps active in teaching and research.
Paul is passionate about teaching and has been the recipient of numerous teaching accolades including 'The Premier's Award for Excellence in Teaching' in WA in 2007. Paul has been involved in basic eye research since undertaking his PhD in and his laboratory research focussed on unravelling the function of macrophages and dendritic cells in the eye and their relevance to common blinding conditions such as uveitis, keratitis, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy but he also has interests in eye development and comparative anatomy.
He has published around 180 research papers/reviews and is co-author of a major textbook on the eye.
Paul has had a major interest in comparative anatomy for his entire career.
